As an experienced Linux user and no-code app developer, I enjoy using the latest tools to create efficient and innovative small apps. Although coding is my hobby, I still love using AI tools and no-code platforms.

iPhones, like any device connected to the internet, can occasionally get infected by malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate devices and cause problems by accessing personal data, disrupting proper functioning, gaining unauthorized access to systems and networks, or just being a general nuisance.

Thankfully, iPhones have robust built-in security that makes malware infections rare, but it still pays to be careful and check periodically. Here is a straightforward guide on how to check for and remove malware from your iPhone.

Update Your iPhone Software

The first step is to make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS software version. Apple continuously updates its iOS software to patch vulnerabilities that malware exploits could utilize. To update your software:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Navigate to General > Software Update.

  3. Your iPhone will check for available updates. Follow any prompts to download and install the latest iOS version.

Updating provides the first line of defense by closing any known holes that malware uses to infiltrate devices.

Scan for Malware Using Third-Party Apps

The iOS App Store offers several highly rated anti-malware apps you can download to perform periodic scans:

  • Malwarebytes - This popular cybersecurity company makes an iOS anti-malware scanner that detects various types of malware strains.

  • Norton - Developed by Symantec, this infamous antivirus software vendor provides Norton Mobile Security specifically for iOS devices.

  • Lookout - Lookout Mobile Security offers robust malware detection coupled with additional security features like data backup and privacy insights.

Download one of these apps and complete a full scan of your device to detect and remove any lurking malware. Most provide both quick and full scans as needed. The full scans will be more comprehensive but take longer.

Check for Unusual Activity or Symptoms

In addition to using a dedicated malware scanning app, watch for any unusual activity on your iPhone that could indicate the presence of malware. Be on the lookout for:

  • Decreased battery life. Malware can drain the battery in the background.

  • Sluggish performance. Too many processes running due to malware infection can slow things down.

  • High data usage. Malware often uses data bandwidth to phone home or exfiltrate data.

  • Unknown apps. Malware may install unwanted or unknown apps not downloaded from the App Store.

  • Popup ads. Increased unwanted popup ads can indicate adware.

  • Hot phone. The extra workload due to malware can cause your iPhone to heat up noticeably.

If you observe any of those symptoms, run a malware scan to investigate further. Delete immediately any apps or processes you don’t recognize.

Practice Safe Browsing Habits

Preventing malware in the first place is the best medicine. Exercise caution when:

  • Installing apps - Stick to the App Store instead of sideloading unknown apps from the internet.

  • Clicking links - Don't tap links in emails or messages from unverified or untrusted sources.

  • Using public WiFi - Public networks are easy for hackers to sneak onto. Use a VPN app to keep data secure.

  • Sharing files - Opening files from people you don't know well could expose you to malware.

Restore Your iPhone

If all else fails and a malware infection persists, a full restore of your iPhone may be necessary. This will wipe the device completely clean:

  1. Backup your iPhone data first via iCloud or iTunes.

  2. Power off your iPhone and turn it back on.

  3. On the startup screen, enter Recovery Mode by holding down the Home button while connecting your iPhone to your computer via USB cable.

  4. In iTunes, select your iPhone and choose the Restore iPhone option.

  5. After restoring, set up your iPhone again and download apps afresh from the App Store.

Conclusion

Take preventative steps and be vigilant, but don't stress too heavily about the threat of iOS malware. The chances of infection remain extremely low, especially for users practicing basic security habits. Run periodic scans with a trusted malware detection app to identify and squash any nasty software that makes it onto your device before it becomes an issue.

Stay alert and keep your iPhone's OS and apps updated for optimal protection.
